From the July 18, 2003 print edition

In Calif. and Laos they sing, 'We love dot-la'
Peter Key
Those who claim Los Angeles is in a different country than the rest of the United States have some new ammunition to back them up. And an Irish firm that has its U.S. operations in Horsham is helping provide it.

Afilias Ltd. is providing technological support to the LA Names Corp., which, since May, has been marketing Internet addresses that end in dot-la to folks who want their Web sites to be associated with the City of Angels.

Dot-la is a country code, meaning that it's used to designate a country. The country is not Los Angeles, however; the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers assigned dot-la to Laos, or, as it calls itself, the Lao People's Democratic Republic.

Laos is a communist nation -- as you might guess from its name -- and, like its few remaining brethren, not exactly an economic powerhouse. So, to bring in some money, the Laotian government struck a deal with LA Names to make dot-la available to anyone who wants to use it. In addition to marketing dot-la to real and wanna-be Angelenos, LA Names also plans to market it to folks who want people to associate their Web sites with Latin America.

LA Names is responsible for running the dot-la registry -- a database that keeps track of all the Web addresses ending with dot-la, or, in Internet speak, all the names in the dot-la domain. But rather than run the registry itself, LANames contracted Afilias, whose world headquarters are in Dublin, to perform the task. (LA Names is based on Guernsey, the second largest of the Channel Islands.)

Running registries is Afilias' raison d'être. A consortium of registrars, which are the organizations that market domain names to the public, it was formed to run the registry for the dot-info domain. That domain has grown to about 1.2 million names in roughly two years, according to Heather D. Carle, Afilias' communications manager. Afilias also has been running the registry for dot-org, which contains about 2.8 million domain names, since late January, Carle said.

In addition to dot-la, Afilias runs registries for about seven other country-code domains and is looking to take on more.

"The country-code market itself is actually poised for very large growth," Carle said.

LA Names launched the www.la Web site, which allows visitors to register names in the dot-la domain, in early May for testing. Since then, more than 10,000 names have been registered, even though LA Names has done little to publicize the site's existence.

"We have registrations every day and it's growing consistently," said Raedene McGary, the chief executive officer of LA Names.

Registered names include mojo.la, sunsetbeach.la, and lifesciences.la, according to the Web site. Most names are available for $50 a year, although LA Names is charging more for what it calls premium names, such as business.la ($10,000), attorney.la ($5,000) and burlesque.la ($200).

McGary wouldn't say how much LA Names is paying the Lao PDR for rights to the dot-la domain, or even when it struck a deal with the country.

Laotians who want a Web site that brings to mind their country, rather than Los Angeles, can still get one. Dot-gov-dot-la has been set aside for the Laotian government, while dot-com-dot-la has been set aside for the Laotian people.

"Dot-la, which we're marketing for the rest of the world, is unrestricted," McGary said.

New program offered
When RCA had its headquarters in Camden, Camden County was one of the hubs of musical technology.

It's not likely to regain that status anytime soon, but Camden County College plans to nudge it in that direction. This fall, the college will begin offering a one-year program in music technology, making it the first community college in the Garden State to do so.

People who complete the program will earn a career certificate in music technology, which they can use to try to get a job as a sound technician, mixing engineer or producer, according to the school. Entry-level salaries in those positions run from about $19,000 to around $40,000 annually, the school said.

Students also may apply their music technology credit hours toward an associate's degree in music at Camden County College or a baccalaureate degree at a four-year school.

With the introduction of program, the college has made plans to build a recording studio on its Camden campus.

Orz
